Importing From China to Egypt: Freight & Customs Guide

A practical logistics guide for businesses importing from China to Egypt: supplier documents, ACI preparation, sea vs air freight, customs and delivery planning.

Quick answer

Importing from China to Egypt is a logistics and customs workflow, not simply buying from a supplier and booking a vessel. Before cargo ships, the Egyptian importer should confirm the commodity's eligibility, HS classification, required certificates, ACI/ACID process and commercial documents.

PBL does not act as the product seller or trading company in this guide. PBL's role is freight forwarding, customs clearance and connected logistics coordination in Egypt.

Step 1. Define the product before asking for freight

Collect a precise product description, material/composition, model, intended use, unit quantity, package dimensions, gross/net weight and any technical datasheet.

These details affect:

  • HS classification
  • Regulatory requirements
  • Freight quotation
  • Container or air-cargo planning
  • Insurance and packing decisions

Step 2. Check the HS code and import controls

Do this before shipment, not when the container is already on the water. Verify the likely tariff item using the Egyptian Customs tariff service and confirm whether approvals or certificates are required.

Read the PBL HS Code guide for the information needed to classify a product properly.

Step 3. Agree the commercial terms with the supplier

Clarify:

  • Incoterm
  • Unit and total price
  • Currency
  • Production lead time
  • Packing specification
  • Who books freight
  • Who pays origin charges
  • Inspection requirements
  • Document issue timing

Use the PBL Incoterms 2020 guide to understand how the chosen trade term divides transport responsibility and cost.

Step 4. Prepare ACI / ACID before shipment

Egypt's ACI procedures require advance shipment data before the cargo is shipped under the applicable mode. The importer should complete the required Nafeza steps and obtain the shipment reference before loading/departure according to the live rules.

Do not let the supplier dispatch cargo until the importer confirms that the advance-cargo requirements are complete.

Step 5. Choose sea or air freight

Sea freight

Usually appropriate for heavier or larger commercial cargo where transit time is less critical. Options include FCL and LCL.

Read FCL vs LCL and Sea Freight in Egypt.

Air freight

Useful for urgent, high-value, lightweight or time-sensitive cargo. Chargeable weight and handling rules matter, so carton dimensions are important.

Read Air Freight in Egypt.

Step 6. Control the supplier document pack

Before shipment, review:

  • Commercial invoice
  • Packing list
  • Draft B/L or AWB
  • Certificate of origin where required
  • Product certificates / inspection documents where applicable
  • ACID and shipment references where required

Do not wait until arrival to discover that the invoice description, package count or consignee details are wrong.

Step 7. Monitor the shipment and prepare clearance before arrival

Use the transport reference to monitor milestones and ETA. PBL's tracking tool supports Container and B/L references with carrier detection and official verification fallbacks.

At the same time, prepare the customs declaration data, classification evidence and regulatory documents so the clearance file is not starting from zero when the cargo arrives.

Step 8. Customs clearance and delivery in Egypt

At arrival, customs and regulatory controls are completed, applicable duties/taxes are settled, carrier/terminal release is coordinated and inland delivery is arranged.

Read the Customs Clearance Process in Egypt for the full workflow.

Common China-to-Egypt mistakes

  • Shipping before ACI/ACID is ready
  • Accepting a supplier HS code without checking Egypt's tariff
  • Quoting freight without carton dimensions or gross weight
  • Choosing an Incoterm without understanding origin charges
  • Approving the B/L draft with incorrect consignee data
  • Missing product-specific certificates
  • Comparing suppliers only on FOB/EXW price and ignoring landed logistics cost
